Vyacheslav Trofimov, Director of UE "Belpatentservice" BelCCI takes part in the first International scientific-practical conference "Intellectual property in the modern world: challenges of time and prospects of development" on October 20, 2021.

The conference was organized on October 20, 2021 by the State Committee on Science and Technology (SCST) and the National Center of Intellectual Property (NCIP) in a mixed format. The face-to-face part of the event was held at the National Library of Belarus.

Daren Tang, General Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), addressed to the participants with a video message, noting the rise of the Republic of Belarus in the Global Innovation Index (GII) for the last two years by 10 positions at once.

For reference: Belarus ranked 64th in the GII in 2020 and 72nd in 2019.

In his speech, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Subbotin stressed that since one of the pressing issues is the effective use of legal instruments by the copyright holder, it is extremely important that the tasks of protecting intellectual property rights, combating unfair competition, countering illegal imports of goods are treated equally and effectively solved in each of the EAEU countries. In an interview with the press, he said that the Strategy of the Republic of Belarus in the field of intellectual property until 2030 is planned to be approved in the near future.

In her welcoming video address during the plenary session of the conference the President of the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO) Saule Tlevlevsova cited the indicators demonstrating a decent level of participation of the Republic of Belarus in the Eurasian patent system. The EAPO President expressed her hope that in the near future Belarus will join the countries participating in the Protocol on the protection of industrial designs to the Eurasian Patent Convention and become a full member of the new regional patent system.

Ruslan Beketayev, Minister of Economy and Financial Policy of the Eurasian Economic Commission, addressed the conference on behalf of the Eurasian Economic Commission.  According to the Minister, the entry into force of the Treaty on Trademarks, Service Marks and Appellations of Origin of Goods of the Eurasian Economic Union and approval of the Instructions to it was a milestone event this year. The Minister also noted that in order to protect "brands" and freedom of movement of goods the Eurasian Economic Commission is working to create a single customs register, which will most easily and effectively protect the trademark of the Union. Currently the Commission together with the member states is building the necessary technological processes to ensure the acceptance of applications within the established procedures.

On behalf of the Federal Service for Intellectual Property Grigory Ivliev addressed to the conference participants with a written greeting, who expressed the belief that the event will allow the participants and listeners to find new effective approaches to solving problems of intellectual property system development, to build a constructive dialogue, to establish cooperation on the issues of interest.

In his speech, Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, has drawn the attention of the participants of the event to the need to introduce new effective measures of material incentives for the results of the intellectual activities of scientists.

More than 30 speeches and greetings were heard during the conference. All the reports of the conference will be published in a special collection. Many speakers of this first international event expressed the hope that it would become a tradition in the future.

At the end of the conference, the National Center of Intellectual Property and the winners of the contest of student works in the field of intellectual property were awarded with a badge of honor.
