Regional Workshop with WIPO Director General Dr. Francis Gurry, Doctor of Law


The Director of Belpatentservice, the patent attorney Vyacheslav Trofimov and his Deputy Yevgueny Pak, took part on 4-5 June 2019 in the Regional Seminar "Actual Aspects of Using Intellectual Property Rights" organized by the National Center for Intellectual Property (NCIP) under the assistance of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)


The Director General of WIPO, Doctor of Law Mr. Francis Gurry, who is in the Republic of Belarus on an official visit, made during the plenary session of the seminar a welcoming speech to the audience. F.Garry emphasized the role of intellectual property in achieving competitive advantages not only between business entities of a single country, but also between entire countries.


During the plenary session, the Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology Alexander Shumilin reported that in 2018 the country earned almost 65 million dollars for the sale of intellectual property, as well as on licensing agreements and assignment of rights to intellectual property, while at the beginning of the five-year period only 15-20 million dollars.


The President of the Eurasian Patent Office of the Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO) Saule Tlevlesova voiced information that the Republic of Belarus ranks second in the number of Eurasian applications for inventions, and fifth in the world for the development of universities, which indicates a great delaying potential for the country.


WIPO Assistant Project Manager of the WIPO Transition and Developed Economy Department, Oleksandr Shevchenko, heartfelt, called for teaching to the basics of intellectual property not only students, but schoolchildren.


During round table discussions Vyacheslav Trofimov sharpened the attention of participants of the event on a problem typical for our country, when a trademark in accordance with the current instructions of the Ministry of Finance is not an intangible asset, while worldwide it is the most important component of intangible assets of any enterprise. The raised question caused a lively discussion during the meeting and on its margins among both Belarusian and foreign participants of the event.
